After a period of freelance playing as a bassoonist, Gill turned her attention to teaching. She built up a lively instrumental department at Stratford House School in Bromley and started to organise holiday events for the players.
After meeting her husband David, then Head of Woodwind for the London Borough of Barnet, she continued this work by creating Harpenden Musicale, now one of the country’s largest private music centres, providing music-making opportunities for children and adults.
Gill also organises summer holiday music meetings all over the country ‘Musicale Holidays’, and a peripatetic ‘Primary Schools’ Instrumental Teaching Scheme’, all supported by a fully stocked music shop, specialising in the education market.
Gill is a musical director of the National Children’s Wind and Chamber Orchestras (www.ncwo.org.uk), running courses every Easter at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire, followed by concerts at home and abroad.
Gill is passionately interested in encouraging everyone to ‘make music’ and thoroughly enjoys adjudicating at festivals all over the country.
She has four children, all of whom are professional musicians, Rupert a Shell/LSO Gerald McDonald winner, Magnus a BBC New Generation Artist, Guy BBC Young Musician 2000, and Izzy, a former member of Simon Cowell’s Band ‘Escala’.
