Musicale Holidays in Harpenden 2012
'The end of week concert was truly inspirational and I am full of admiration for all the staff'
'This has been the best week ever. I can't wait for next year'
'I have just realised that I have done a week's practice in a week, and my playing has come on in leaps and bounds'
'The standard of the Musicale Young Artists' Programme is always outstanding, and the fact that so many young people from all over Britain want to take part simply endorses the excellence of the training given during the courses' - Hertfordshire Advertiser
Gill and David Johnston have masterminded Musicale Holidays since its beginning in 1977. Their passion is to involve children in meaningful and, above all, enjoyable music making. Many of their staff grew up attending a summer Musicale, and now they are passing on their enthusiasm to the next generation of young musicians.

Step-Up to Music!
'We wondered how our son would fare as he is only six, however, he was hugely enthusiastic about going each day and clearly was thoroughly enjoying himself'
Step-Up to Music! is an opportunity for 5 – 8 year olds to get hands on experience of musical instruments. All the children will use the recorder and the Lyons C Clarinet, as well as being introduced to other orchestral and band instruments.
Step-Up to Music! will explore aspects of music making through activities which will include performing songs and creating sound pictures using tuned and untuned percussion instruments, all based on a carefully selected theme.
The week ends with a presentation by the children in front of a friendly audience of family and friends, showing a selection of the musical skills they have learnt.
Children who have just started instrumental lessons, and who feel that they are not quite ready for the instrumental course are also very welcome to apply for Step-Up to Music!
To sum up, Step-Up to Music! is designed to inspire children to play a musical instrument. It is very pleasing that each year, a significant number of past Step-Up to Music! children return to Musicale Holidays as instrumentalists.

Many distinguished players have come to play at the Public Hall in Harpenden including The Fine Arts Brass, The Nash Ensemble,The Aronowitz Ensemble, The Apollo Saxophone Quartet, The Navarra String Quartet, Julian Bliss and Guy Johnston. Their playing is inspirational for the members of the course who share the auditorium with members of the general public.
