Gill and David Johnston have masterminded the music courses since their inception. Their passion is to involve children in meaningful and, above all, enjoyable music making. Many of their staff grew up with Musicale Holidays. Now they can pass on their enthusiasm to the next generation of young musicians. |

Let's
Make a Musical
Ever wanted to appear 'on stage'? Now is your chance!
This exciting and very popular course now in Cheadle, Harpenden, Oxford,
Salisbury and Sevenoaks involves the three performance elements of
singing, dancing and acting. Students develop skills in working as a
team, performing as an ensemble and become more confident and
comfortable as young performers. Over the five days, the students will
create a musical theatre piece, which is performed to parents and
friends on the last evening.

The
Harpenden Musicale Holiday
Harpenden
is the home of Musicale Holidays. There are three weeks to choose
from.
The instrumental courses A are divided into junior orchestras and
bands of primary school age
(beginner to grade 5) and intermediate orchestras and bands of secondary
school age (grade 3 - 6). Senior players (grade 6/7/8) take part
in the Young Artists' Programme. The junior courses are held at
Manland Junior School while the intermediate and ''Let's Make a
Musical'' courses are held at St George's School. In week three,
the intermediate groups perform in the Harpenden Music Festival.
All members of the Harpenden courses are entitled to free entry
to the Harpenden Music Festival concerts given by visiting professional
musicians. (no one will forget last year's inspirational playing
of the Fine Arts Brass Ensemble).
The music activity courses B are held each week using the Manland
and Crabtree Primary Schools.

The
Musicale Young Artists' Programme (MYAP)
The
Musicale Young Artists' Symphony Orchestra
The Musicale Young Artists' Wind Orchestra
A very high standard of playing is guaranteed on this course, backed up by sectional tutoring. Held in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, this is a residential course for players of grade 7/8+. Many of the members have attended their local Musicale Holiday in previous years and have now reached a standard high enough to join the Young Artists' Programme. Other players come from the NCWO and other national organisations as well as from abroad. Both groups play challenging repertoire and perform during the Harpenden Music Festival. Members benefit from free attendance to the festival (recent performers include Fine Arts Brass, Duel, The Kings Piano Trio, Nash Ensemble and the Apollo Saxophone Quartet). Selected members also play in the High Street Methodist Church lunchtime concert series during the same busy week. As a sample of recent repertoire, the Musicale Young Artists’ Wind Orchestra has performed music by John Williams, George Gershwin, Shostakovich and Martin Ellerby. This year the Musicale Young Artists’ Symphony Orchestra will perform Glinka’s Overture: Russlan and Ludmilla, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto (soloist Magnus Johnston – BBC New Generation Artist) and Brahms – Symphony No 2.

The
Harpenden Music Festival (week three)
''To encourage children to attend more live concerts, we decided
to bring some concerts to them for free!' Many distinguished groups
(Fine Arts Brass, Nash Ensemble, Kings Piano Trio, Apollo Saxophone
Quartet) have come to play at the Public Hall in Harpenden. Their
playing is inspirational for the members of the course who share
the auditorium with members of the general public. Some members
of the Young Artists' Programme are also given the opportunity
to give a short recital during the week at one of the lunchtime
concerts at the High Street Methodist Church.
