St John’s C of E Primary School

From September 2023 we are very pleased to offer the following lessons during the school day:

  • Violin – individual and paired if numbers available
  • Cello – individual and paired if numbers available
  • Flute
  • Saxophone
  • Clarinet
  • Voice
  • Trumpet
  • Cornet
  • Trombone
  • French horn

We teach 10 lessons a term for St John’s students. You will be assigned a tutor who will teach your child each week, encourage their playing, advance their skills and, if appropriate, enter them for graded exams. We have a parent portal, Teachworks, for which you will be given log in details to access times and dates of scheduled lessons and ensembles, lesson notes from the tutor and your family profile.

Tutors try to be flexible if they are given enough warning about a student’s future lesson absence. If your child has a sports match or school trip just let your music tutor know well in advance, at least 48 hours, and they will arrange a suitable time for your child’s next lesson. However, if a student misses a lesson with no warning the lesson is usually forfeited. If a lesson is cancelled by the tutor or Musicale, the student will be given credit on their account or offered another lesson time that is mutually convenient.

Finding an instrument

Instruments can be hired or bought from the Musicale Shop, Sun Lane, Harpenden AL5 4GJ. Please call 01582 769712 for more information and advice or head to Rentals.

How do I pay?

Invoices are emailed out automatically each term or shortly after you have been sent confirmation of your lessons if you are a new starter. These will include details about the payment options and we recommend signing up to a direct debit.

Lessons cost £192 for individual lessons and £96 for paired lessons (if available) per term. Lessons are 20 minutes long. Paired lessons will be at the descretion of the tutor depending on the students’ progress to ensure both students are receiving adequate attention.

If you wish to stop lessons you must give half a term’s notice or pay half a term’s fees in lieu. For all invoice queries please contact
